I contact my gurus whenever I'm going through a bad patch. Here is the latest words from my Guru.
Me : Guru, I'm feeling a lot down. And as usual , I'm not sure how to get out of it. Guru : Hmm... I can give you steps to comeout of it . Before that , I want to know if you've money. Me : Yes Guru , I've money with me. Guru : Then Spend it. Me : What ?? Guru : Yes, spend the money you've with you.
Me : Does money bring you happiness, Guru ? I've spend a lot of money for shopping and it never gave me happiness . All that it gave me was a big bill. Guru : Oh my Son, its not the money or shopping that brings you happiness. Listen to me carefully. Guru : Human life is all about taking control over three things, "existance", "boredom", "entertainment". Guru : You've cleared all necessary hurdles for you to exist. Your job is secure, your personal life is secure . Thats when you move to boredom. Guru : Your social surrounding helps you overcome the boredom. You have many friends and you know how to make your job is dynamic enough to keep you away from feeling bored. Guru : All that you lack is "Entertainment". Every human being needs to entertain oneself to keep yourself afloat. Thats why I want you to spend some money and be entertained. Guru : Mind you, these three essential components of everything in your life. Be it your professional life , married life , biking life , linux life and even sex life. There is an initial period of existance, when you prove to yourself that you are worth. Then a time when you build relationships with like minded people and finally you do crazy things to entertain yourself.
Pweeeeh , So its that simple, eh ? I need to entertain myself . Perhaps a bike trip to some unknown place , perhaps just go to a saloon and spike my hair or even do something that I never thought I would ever do.
Its almost 3 weeks since I met my guru , but i've never forgotten those three words . Existance, Boredom and Entertainment. It actually forms the root philosophy of Anti-Procreation Movement(APM) . APM's philosophy is that the human condition is one of profound suffering and that one should refrain from spreading this suffering to a new generation by abstaining from procreation.
Well, I've no plans to follow APM in my life. Partially because , I'll have to abstain from procreation (if only you understood what I meant by that ) and mostly because its a rather pessimistic way of seeing life. Life is all about understanding the root causes of sufferings and erradicating it so that you'll not pass it on to the new generation ( let them figure out new sufferings ;-) ) . I cant stand pessimism by any chance.
I've read somewhere that to attain salvation, hinduism gives you 3 basic methods.
Bhakti yoga: focuses on the spiritual practice of fostering loving devotion to God, called bhakti. Jnana yoga: focuses on the understanding of supreme knowledge. Wiki says, Jnana consists of properly understanding kshetra (the field of activity--that is, the body) and kshetra-jna (the knower of the body--that is, the soul). Karma yoga : focuses on the adherence to duty (dharma) while remaining detached from the reward.
I prefer "karma yoga", not because it gives you salvation ( after death ?? ) but because its easiest. Sometimes you fail, sometimes you win ... but why bother . Do the duty.
Often I fail to understand the hoopla that surrounds the temples, gender and caste. There was a country wide discussion on whether women should be allowed into Sabarimala and if non-hindus should be allowed inside Guruvayur temple. My opinion is, let others do what they feel is right . As long as they are not stopping you from praying in a temple , why should you bother ?
"Karmaneva Adikarasthe Maphaleshu Kadachana" .. Bhagavad Gita.
You only have responsibility over your actions and not the fruits of your actions.
Homer: What's the meaning of life? God: Homer, I can't tell you that. You'll find out when you die. Homer: I can't wait that long! God: You can't wait six months? -- "Homer the Heretic"
Homer wants to know now, so God decides to tell him. "The meaning of life is..."
